Orbital, Applied Computing’s foundation model for energy operations, becomes available to Databricks customers worldwide - starting with operators based in India.
Mumbai, India / London, UK – 19 September 2025, Applied Computing, the AI company pioneering foundation models for energy operators, is announcing a new partnership with Databricks, the Data and AI company, through the Databricks Startup and Built on Partner Programmes.
Applied Computing has developed Orbital, the first foundation model designed specifically for the world’s most complex energy environments, including refining, upstream operations, LNG, and renewables. Orbital is built on physics-inspired, domain-specific AI that delivers accuracy, explainability and real-time optimisation at scale.
By embedding Orbital into the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform, customers in energy and utilities can access industry-specific AI models directly within Databricks’ industry-leading data & AI platform. This unlocks the next step in digital transformation for the many energy operators already using Databricks’ core platform.
Dan Jeavons, President, Applied Computing, comments: “by combining Orbital with the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform, we can bring superintelligent, physics-grounded AI into the workflows of global energy operators. This is about moving beyond experimentation to real-world impact - reducing costs, improving resilience and accelerating the energy transition. We’re already seeing the real work impact that Orbital can have with customers here in India, and through this partnership with Databricks, we are making Orbital more accessible and easier to adopt for existing Databricks customers.”
Customers leverage the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform to modernise their data estate and accelerate their time to value through data & AI., making it easier for organisations to harness the power of their data for analytics and AI apps and agents. Built on an open source foundation, the platform enables organisations to drive innovation to increase revenue, lower costs, and reduce risk.
With Orbital now on Databricks, these major customers can apply industry-specific foundation models to the toughest challenges in energy, from refinery optimisation to decarbonisation.
“Given the critical importance of the energy industry, we continually hear from customers in the energy sector about the need to transition from the potential of data and AI to real-world impact,” said Julien Debard, Global Energy Leader, Databricks. “Applied Computing’s Orbital model represents a breakthrough in industrial AI, and we’re delighted to welcome them to the Databricks Startup and Built on Programmes. Together we can help the world’s most critical industries modernise faster, with data and AI apps and agents they can trust.”
The announcement builds on Applied Computing’s momentum in 2025, following its £9 million seed round led by Stride.vc with Repeat.vc – one of the largest ever for a UK AI company – and the appointment of Dan Jeavons as President, who joined following a two-decade tenure at Shell, where he was most recently VP of Computational Science and Digital Innovation, leading their global AI programme.
Founded by Callum Adamson (CEO) and Dr. Samyakh Tukra (Chief AI Officer), Applied Computing is already working with some of the world’s most complex industrial sites. Its mission is to bring superintelligent, production-grade AI to the critical industries that underpin modern civilisation.
Applied Computing has tripled in size since January and is preparing to launch its Series A to scale globally. Orbital, the company’s flagship platform, sets new state-of-the-art benchmarks in time-series forecasting, optimising energy operations end-to-end. Already demonstrating the potential to cut refinery and petrochemical energy consumption by up to 10%, Orbital can deliver millions in annual savings from each deployment whilst reducing emissions, ushering in a new era for the energy industry where profitability and sustainability go hand in hand.
